Joe Hackney has practiced law in Chapel Hill with Bob Epting since 1974. He has almost 40 years experience in family law and civil litigation in the courts of Orange County and surrounding counties. As a legislator (see below) he was instrumental in drafting and passing much of the law in North Carolina as it now exists on equitable distribution, alimony, child support, and many other areas of family law and civil and criminal law. He is a member of the Family Law Section of the North Carolina Bar Association.TOP
Hackney has earned an "AV" rating from his peers in the legal profession in Martindale-Hubbell attorney ratings.
Hackney began his legal career as a clerk for North Carolina Supreme Court Associate Justice Frank Huskins. He worked as an assistant district attorney in Orange and Chatham counties from 1971-74.
Hackney received a bachelorís degree in political science and a juris doctorate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He and his wife, Betsy, have two adult sons, Dan and Will.
Hackney served 32 years in the North Carolina House of Representatives, and served as Speaker of the House 2007-2011. He also served as Majority Leader, Speaker Pro Tem, and Minority Leader before retiring from the House in 2012. He is a past president of the National Conference of State Legislatures. In 2007, he received the groupís Excellence in State Legislative Leadership Award, the nationís top honor for state legislators.
In addition, he and his brother continue to operate the family cattle farm in Chatham County where they grew up.
